Safety & Playa Friendliness

Fire Safety
Aside from a final burn, The Watch will not make use of any fire, flame effects.

Wind-Resistance
The watch, including all moving parts, will be stable in gusts up to 70mph.  Maximum wind loads for the largest pieces will be as follows:
  • Zoetrope, 4’ diameter x 3’ tall: 190 lbs
All of the zoetropes will be supported by a 2” diameter piece of black pipe driven 3’ into the playa surface.  Heavy duty bearings will manage the wind load and a collar will prevent wind from lifting a zoetrope off of its axle.
  • Watch Face, 5.5’x10’ profile to the wind: 910 lbs
The watch face will be secured to a frame that is anchored with decomposed granite.  The anchor will consist of a 4’x4’ square of plywood placed on the playa surface, below the layer of DG burn scar protection.  Approximately 480 lbs of DG (based on a depth of 3”) will weight down each piece of plywood.  Four total pieces will be used.
Sharp Surfaces
The etched brass will be buffed in order to remove any sharp edges.

Nightime Safety
The Watch will be well lit at night.  Each zoetrope will be illuminated from the interior, the watch hands will be outlined in EL wire, and the numbers on the face of the watch will be raised and lit from underneath.  Lighting will be battery powered, eliminating the possibility of generator failure.

Retroreflective strips will also be added to the pieces in case of battery or light failure.  These strips produce an extremely bright flaring reflection when a light is pointed at them.

After the burn, the area around the piece will be marked with blinkies.

Undisturbed Playa Surface
The only items breaking the playa surface will be 2” diameter black pipes used for the zoetrope axles

MOOP Free
All elements of this piece will be well secured to prevent them from falling off or blowing away.  All construction work that would produce sawdust, wood chips or other debris will be completed off playa.  See the LNT plan for additional information.

Lead Free
The brass used for decorative elements will be lead-free “Naval Brass.”  (Some varieties of brass include a small percentage of lead.)
